Basic Overview of Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is widely recognized as the mixture of
four main disciplines: Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, and
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
.

Although these four arts are typically acknowledged as the core
components of MMA, other systems are often added to the mix.

For instance, Sambo and Judo are frequently utilized. Also,
we implement many of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do concepts.

Regardless of which systems are used, MMA breaks down
into three main areas: Stand Up, Clinch, and Ground.

> Stand-Up occurs when both opponents are standing
at a distance from each other.

> Clinch occurs when both opponents are still
standing, but are locked in a hold together.

> Ground occurs when both opponents are on
the ground.

Overtime, various methods of fighting have emerged within MMA. It is common to see the following styles
employed as strategies for winning.

Sprawl-and-Brawl – Keeping the fight standing while defending against takedowns.

Clinch Fighting – Controlling the opponent with clinch-holds while simultaneously wearing them down
with strikes from the clinch (knees and elbows or 'dirty boxing').

Ground-and-Pound – Taking the opponent down and keeping them pinned while striking (pounding)
down on them.

Submission Grappling – Grounding the opponent and locking them up in a submission hold.

Mixing It Up – Using a variety of tactics to systematically dispatch of an opponent. Requires
being well-versed in all 3 areas of MMA – stand-up, clinch, and ground.

Run-and-Gun – Scoring points by landing strikes while darting in and out of range
until time runs out and the fight is won on points.

Lay-and-Pray – Keeping the opponent pinned on the ground while 'praying' time runs
out and the fight is won on points.

Kimbo Slice and Tank Abbott make friends –
a gesture exemplifying the respect and
brotherhood present in mixed martial arts.
